Pakistan Tourist Visa and Trekking Permits Guide

Visa Categories:

Pakistan offers several types of visas. The most common for travelers is the Tourist Visa. If you’re trekking or climbing in the mountains, it’s best to apply for the Mountaineering/Trekking Visa. Other types include Business Visas and Visa-on-Arrival for some nationalities.

Eligibility:
Citizens of over 190 countries can apply online for a visa to Pakistan. You must apply from your country of residence. Indian and Taiwanese passport holders need to apply through an embassy.

How to Apply:
Apply through Pakistan’s Online Visa System at visa.nadra.gov.pk. First, create an account and fill in your personal and travel details. Upload the required documents, pay the fee, and wait for processing. Standard processing takes about 7–10 business days. Once approved, you’ll receive your e-Visa by email. Print and carry it while traveling.

Required Documents:
You need a valid passport, passport-size photo, and proof of travel (like flight and hotel bookings). Some travelers must also submit an invitation letter from a registered tour operator in Pakistan. Make sure all details are correct to avoid delays.

Visa-on-Arrival (VOA):
Pakistan offers VOA for select countries, but you still need to apply online in advance for pre-approval.

Processing Times and Fees:
Visa processing takes 7–10 working days. Fees vary by nationality and visa type. It’s advised to apply 4–6 weeks before your trip.

Extensions and Rules:
Tourist visas are usually valid for 30 days and can be extended inside Pakistan. Always follow your approved itinerary and visa conditions. Carry printouts of your visa and permit at all times.

Restricted Areas:
Many treks, including K2 Base Camp and Gondogoro La, are in restricted areas and require permits. Regions like Central Karakoram National Park (CKNP) always require official permission.

Types of Permits:

• Trekking Permit for restricted zones

• CKNP Permit for K2 and surrounding areas

• Climbing Permit for peaks over 6500m

• Environmental/Waste Management Fees

How to Apply for Permits:

• For CKNP, additional approval from the Ministry of Interior is required

You must have a licensed guide and porters in restricted zones. Stick to your approved route. Carry your permit and itinerary at all times. Respect local customs and avoid restricted photography areas.
